She had Naomi Campbell’s cheekbones and rich complexion, Mel B.’s full curls from the Spice Girl Days, and Zadie Smith’s wit. Instead, she felt terminally single and undateable.
Before we even were able to address her action plan for dating, we needed to address her insecurity.
Though racial microaggressions are felt by every marginalized group within the dating realm, I am building upon my own personal experiences with heterosexual, cisgender white men to offer suggestions on how to ease racial tensions that may arise in a white man/black woman pairing.
Once, I was at a bar with friends when two white men approached me.
Cooper kept guard while Fedrick and Gordon allegedly attacked her.
The woman said that they told her, “We’re going to teach you a lesson about dating a black man and white [women] don’t mean [expletive] in this town.” When the alleged attack was over, they told her that they would “make it ten times worse next time” if she filed a police report.
Then she was able to put her best foot forward externally with a profile that reflected her charm, grace, and inner loveliness.
She’s now been with her beau – a wonderful man — for a little over a year.
